The House
The original construction of this historic building was completed in 1888. It was purpose built to house the local Council Chambers and District Hall; hence its current name. In 1920 it’s role was altered and it became the Nursing Home of Penneshaw, with treatment rooms and hospital beds. To this day many Kangaroo Islanders refer to it as ‘The Old Hospital’ and we have heard some fascinating tales of experiences had in this establishment. An account of this history, researched and kindly provided by its previous owners, is kept at the house today.
During 2017, having purchased the property a year earlier, we, in collaboration with our interior design business, Vivre Interiors and a highly skilled building team, have lovingly renovated Chambers House. It has become a wonderful retreat for our family and we find it instantly therapeutic and relaxing to spend time here.
To allow you to unwind, Chambers House offers 4 generous bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, so a maximum of eight people can comfortably stay. The bedrooms comprise 2 queen, and 2 king sized beds, one of which can be converted to 2 singles for a twin share room if desired. The master ensuite bathroom contains a full sized bath in addition to the large ‘rain’ shower, as is in the other two easily shared bathrooms. There is also a well equipped laundry, with a high quality washing machine and dryer.
The kitchen, as they say, is the heart of the home and as such, is superbly equipped to fulfill its role. Entertaining is something we love to do, especially while relaxing on holiday and there’s plenty of room to seat family and friends in this welcoming space. Whether at the island bench, seating 8 or 9; the dining table, 12; or the outdoor table which seats 10 people; it’s easy and there’s much enjoyment to be had.
Dashes of vibrant colour create fun against the neutral tones throughout the house and the ‘open or closed’ wood fire in the living area is heavenly. We love winter here as curling up on the generous leather sofas to read or enjoy a movie is one of life’s great, lazy luxuries.
Of course, there is always the view!
